Janet Echelman unveiled her “1.78 Madrid” sculpture last week at Madrid’s Plaza Mayor, marking the city’s 400th anniversary. The suspended thread sculpture, latest from the American artist’s Earth Time Series, hangs above the statue of King Philip III of Spain. The vibrant net-like installation is made of strong, engineered fibers that are knotted, braided, and spliced together to form a net that moves with the wind. During night, the sculpture comes alive with projected colored lights. The sculpture evokes the idea of time as the title itself has been taken from the fact that the day was shortened by 1.78 microseconds due to the 2011 earthquake in Japan.Echelman observes: “In the last four hundred years, people have gathered at Plaza Mayor to witness bull-fights and Spanish Inquisition burnings. Today we gather together with art that explores our concept of time, to discuss ideas. This is a hopeful trajectory for humanity,” as noted by ArchDaily.
