“Does Permanence Matter? Ephemeral Urbanism,” an exhibition of works based on long-term urban planning is on view at Architekturmuseum der Tu München in der Pinakothek Der Moderne, Munich. The exhibition looks at the concept of utilizing open spaces for a temporary time period to house a large population of people. The examples being the Kumbh Mela pilgrimage in India, Munich’s Oktoberfest, and the Burning Man Festival in Nevada. These events demonstrate how temporary shelters are built with basic amenities for a short period of time. “Does Permanence Matter? Ephemeral Urbanism” aims to bring to light that these non-permanent settlements challenge the notion of permanence that cities provide. It offers a fresh perspective about ephemeral in architecture and urbanism which till now has been considered to hold a minor role. The exhibition is based on long term study by Rahul Mehrotra at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and Felipe Vera at the Centro de Ecología, Paisaje y Urbanismo in Santiago de Chile. In the wake of the recent global mass migration due to political strife, climate change, and natural disasters such structures should be examined closely. The Architekturmuseum der Technischen Universität München was founded in 1868 as a teaching center for students of architecture at the New Polytechnic College (Neue Polytechnische Schule) which is now the Technical University (Technische Universität München). Friedrich von Thiersch erected a new building for the University in Gabelsbergerstrasse in 1912.The architectural collection was housed in a large wing of the building and formed the center of the Department of Architecture. However, during World War II due to the timely evacuation, much of the holdings were saved from destruction. In 1986, Winfried Nerdinger became a professor in architectural history at the TUM, and two years later appointed as the first Director of the Architecture Museum of the Technische Universität München. The museum further advanced its programs by opening presentation rooms in the Pinakothek der Moderne in 2002.“Does Permanence Matter? Ephemeral Urbanism” runs from September 14, 2017 through March 18, 2018 at Architekturmuseum der TU München, Pinakothek der Moderne, Barer Str. 40, 80333 München, Germany. For details, visit: www.architekturmuseum.de/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
