Bamboo groves are a quintessential part of the Japanese landscape, and bamboo weaving is one of the oldest technical skills to have developed in Japan. In its new exhibition “Bamboo: Tradition in Contemporary Form” the National Gallery of Victoriaexplores the evocative, sensual and sculptural power of contemporary Japanese bamboo art. With the help of 22 contemporary and five traditional bamboo works, the show presents sculptural forms that exhibit a visual drama, a still-dance, of the aesthetical elements in patterns and geometries. The works are complemented by a selection of historical paintings, lacquer ware, musical instruments, woodblock prints and hand-printed books from the NGV Collection and private collection loans. The exhibition is on view through January 29, 2017 at NGV International, 180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne.  For details, visit: ngv.vic.gov.auClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
