Latin American design brings a renewed emphasis in interior design on geometry and pattern, bold colors and organic forms, just in time for summer. It has never been a better time to be a designer from Latin America. The interest in the continent is surging, thanks in part to something of a boom in the market for Brazilian mid-century Modern. With established names like Oscar Niemeyer and Joaquim Tenreiro leading the trend, and contemporary superstars Brother Campana, the qualities of a light, tropical, playful Modernism have returned. Combining filigree geometry with animal and plant imagery, simple lines with bright colors, this is a school of design that has arisen from the mid-century injection of European modernist discipline into the flamboyant indigenous aesthetic. Then, it created a Modernity in which no minimalism was so strict that a straight line could not be curved. Today, it is reflected in a conceptualism which does not shy away from humor and comfort.Even IKEA has jumped on the bandwagon, with a new collection of brightly patterned homewares inspired by Brazil. “Everything in Brazil is a bit more relaxed,” says creative director Mette Nielsen. “Sizes are more generous, architecture more extreme, and people more life-affirming.”From the vibrant cabinets by Leonardo di Caprio – a designer in no way related to the Hollywood actor – to the seaworld-inspired outdoor furniture by the Brothers Campana, the unmistakable flavor of Latin American design returns this summer, in a myriad bold patterns.Click on the slideshow to see our picks.
