It was at the Beau-Rivage Palace Hotel, on the shores of Lake Geneva in Lausanne, Switzerland, that iconic fashion designer Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel used to escape to for months at a time, so enamored of the view of Évian-les-Bains, France, across the water, was she. It was also near where she would meet a doctor at Valmont clinic, to whom she would be so grateful for his medical care, that she gifted him a pair of armchairs designed by Diego Giacometti. The Pommeaux de Canne chairs, produced in 1963 of patinated bronze, is one of the highlighted lots in the Design du Soir sale at Christie’s in Paris on May 25. They are being offered by the family of the Swiss physician, with whom they have remained since the post-war years.“We are glad to present this beautiful pair of armchairs in our next evening sale. It gathers all the required criteria of the actual art market: works of art of high quality, in very good condition and from a prestigious provenance,” said Pauline de Smedt, director of the decorative arts and design department at Christie’s Paris.
