“For many years, ceramics and glass have been considered crafts, but the artists in those fields are very ready to move from craft to art,” declares Meg Wendy, co-producer of the New York Ceramics & Glass Fair, running in January. Comprising 30 exhibitors, the exhibition, according to Wendy, continues to draw interest from a burgeoning number of collectors, decorators, and museum curators. Explaining this year’s offerings, Wendy says, “People’s tastes have grown dramatically, and this year we have many more glass dealers. I haven’t been to a contemporary show lately that hasn’t included ceramics and glass. They are really hot right now.”Among her personal favorites are Hideaki Miyamura, who is best known for his unique iridescent glazes, and Michael Boroniec, a contemporary ceramic artist who specializes in making spiral sculptures. “By introducing the work of single, cutting-edge artists in these mediums, we are broadening the horizon of the fair and pushing its boundaries to illustrate how three-dimensional art has gained a foothold in the world of art and design,” she adds. The fair will also feature the works of contemporary artists including Carrie Gustafson, Gina Piccirilli Hayden, and Vetro Vero, while Michelle Erickson, Ian Simmonds, Antiques Van Geenen, Mark J. West, and Cheng Yanare are some of the participating dealers and galleries.New York Ceramics & Glass Fair runs from January 21‑24 at the Bohemian National Hall, New York.
