Health Aide Charged With Assault on 98-Year-Old Architect IM Pei

The health aide to Pritzker Prize-winning architect IM Pei has been charged with assaulting Pei in his Upper East Side home.The 28-year-old home health aide Eter Nikolaishvili was arrested last week after an incident on December 13. The Chinese-born American architect, best known for the glass and steel pyramid at the Musée du Louvre, was taken to hospital at 4am on the day of the incident, suffering from bleeding lacerations and bruising, and red marks on his forearm, according to reports.Nikolaishvili was arrested two weeks later, on December 29, and released without bail on the same day. Pei reported the incident to the police in mid-December.Ieoh Ming Pei was born in China in 1917, but studied architecture in the US, and established his practice there. He has designed celebrated projects around the world, including the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, the Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin, the National Gallery of Art East Building in Washington DC, and the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong. His best-known work remains the pyramid in front of The Louvre. It was initially a controversial project dubbed an “atrocity” and was followed by the resignation of the then-director of the Louvre, André Chabaud. Today the pyramid is one of Paris’s most photographed landmarks.Pei's awards include the Pritzker Prize in 1983, and the Royal Gold Metal in 2010. He retired from full-time practice in 1990.
