Through August 4, Bergamin & Gomide in São Paulo is showcasing 17 projects by the architect Porfirio Valladares made of wood by cabinetmaker Ze Dias.“The handcrafted pieces are miniatures of architectural styles that incorporate a double meaning: they are both furniture-model and sculpture-model. By means of these objects, Porfirio creates an analogy between the drawers and the urban housing and life in large cities,” the gallery says.“I have always been fond of drawers and I find comfort in knowing that the objects that I care for are hidden away in the drawers, protected from prying eyes,” says Porfirio Valladares. The concept of the exhibition reflects Porfirio’s unease with housing in large cities.“The title, ‘(i)moveis,’ seems provocative to me as it deals with the idea of furniture (moveis) – since they are all chests of drawers in the end – and also with the real estate (imoveis) launched by builders who usually place mock-ups of the buildings under construction in their sale stands in order to seduce potential buyers,” the gallery quotes Porfirio Valladares. The architect explains that there is a certain discomfort in his perception, “this thing of seeing apartments as drawers, with people kept and stacked up in the apartments/drawers of strange buildings, in arrangements that become increasingly more bizarre every day, which comprise the cities in which we live.”The exhibition showcases high-quality woods and pays tribute to the work of cabinet-makers, who are becoming increasingly rare. The partnership of more than 35 years between Porfirio and Ze Dias has resulted in the works shown in “(i)moveis,” created with sheets of solid freijo wood applied on multi layer plywood panels, and sheets of imbuia wood simulating glass, all joined, glued and varnished. As well as being utilitarian, these objects “serve to safeguard dreams and fantasies”, according to their creator. “(i)moveis” is on view through August 4, 2018 at Bergamin & Gomide, Rua Oscar Freire, 379 lj 1, Jardins, 01426-001, São Paulo – Brazil. For details, visit: https://bergamingomide.com.br/en/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.http://www.blouinartinfo.com/ Founder: Louise Blouin
